Large Fowl Non-Bearded White Crested Black Polish
Large Fowl Non-Bearded White Crested Black Polish
Started in 2019 with foundation birds from Timm Zitz, our LF WC Black Polish program took a hit during our move—but in spring 2025 Timm helped us rebuild what remained. Timm is a legendary Polish breeder who prizes big, massive Polish with meticulous attention to detail; that philosophy anchors our line today. We select for a tall, balanced outline, a well-carried full white crest on a clean, black body, strong legs, and steady temperaments that handle well in the aisle. When available, we offer started chicks at 3–4 weeks for an easier start.
Quick facts (standard & variety)
Class: Continental (Large Fowl); Variety: Non-Bearded White Crested Black (WC Black) — APA-recognized.
Type details: Clean-legged; V-shaped (horn) comb; white earlobes; slate legs; body lustrous black with a white crest (occasional dark ticking can occur).
Production & personality
Eggs: In our program, Polish are near-daily layers in season, comparable to our best utility birds for steady production.
Temperament: Generally docile but can be a bit alert/flighty since large crests limit vision.
Care notes for new exhibitors
Crest mites (important): In humid weather or after rain/temperature swings, assume your Polish may pick up crest mites. Treat immediately with a poultry-safe mite control per label and re-check in 7–10 days. Keep crests dry (covered drinker area) and bedding fresh.
Vitamin A watch: Polish can be prone to vitamin A shortfalls. Supplement as needed (e.g., A-D-E poultry vitamins or vitamin-A–rich greens/alfalfa). We also use BOSS (black oil sunflower seed) in our program for condition and as part of our vitamin support.
Controlled start: Raise Polish in a controlled environment for up to 12 weeks before moving them outdoors; this protects crests and helps them transition to the elements.
Vision trims: If needed, trim a few crest filaments around the eyes so birds can navigate and show confidently.
Heat/sun: Provide sensible shade; crests trap heat and intense sun can stress birds and stain crests.
What you’ll see in our pen
Tall, elegant frames with that unmistakable snow-white “helmet” crest over deep, green-sheened black; clean slate legs; bright white lobes; and a calm, handled-often disposition. True to Timm Zitz’s emphasis, our focus is size, balance, and detail work—the little polish “finish” items that separate a nice bird from a memorable one on the show table.
